Terpenes: What They Are and Why They Matter More Than THC
Cannabis aroma is the work of terpenes, but their influence goes far beyond smell. Understand the entourage effect and how terpenes shape your experience.
What are terpenes?
Terpenes are aromatic compounds found in thousands of plants: limonene gives lemons their citrus smell, pinene is the scent of pine, myrcene is found in hops. Cannabis produces over 200 distinct terpenes, though each strain has between 5 and 15 dominant ones. Evolutionarily, they attract pollinators and repel insects. In humans, they have documented physiological effects.
The entourage effect
The entourage effect theory, proposed by researchers Raphael Mechoulam and Shimon Ben-Shabat, suggests that cannabinoids and terpenes work synergistically. THC alone produces one set of effects, but combined with certain terpenes, those effects are modulated. For example, myrcene increases blood-brain barrier permeability (potentially intensifying THC's effects), while limonene has anxiolytic properties that can counteract the anxiety THC causes in high doses.
Common terpenes and their effects
Myrcene: the most abundant in commercial cannabis. Associated with sedative and relaxing effects. Earthy/herbal aroma. Found in mango and hops. Limonene: citrusy and energizing. Associated with mood elevation and stress reduction. Pinene: pine aroma. May improve memory and has anti-inflammatory properties. Linalool: floral (similar to lavender). Anxiolytic and sedative effects. Caryophyllene: the only terpene that also acts as a cannabinoid, binding to CB2 receptors. Anti-inflammatory. Found in black pepper.
How to use this information
When exploring a strain on WeedHub, check the dominant terpenes. If you want something energizing, prioritize strains high in limonene or pinene. If you want relaxation, look for myrcene or linalool. Terpenes survive better at lower vaporization temperatures (170–185°C) than in direct combustion, where many are destroyed before you inhale them.
