First time with cannabis: what to expect and how to prepare
An honest guide for beginners. What happens in your body, how to choose your first strain, the 'start low, go slow' rule, and what to do if you feel uncomfortable.
Before you start
Cannabis isn't for everyone, and that's okay. Before trying it, get informed: THC activates receptors in your brain that haven't been activated before, and the experience can be very different from what you expect. Most importantly: there's no rush. The first time doesn't need to be intense to be good. Choose a calm moment with no important commitments the next day, and with trusted people if possible.
Choosing the right strain for your first time
For a first experience, look for strains with moderate THC (between 10% and 16%) and some CBD — CBD softens THC's effects and reduces the likelihood of anxiety. Strains with myrcene or linalool dominance tend to be more relaxing. Avoid concentrates, high-potency oils (30%+ THC), or edibles for your first experience: they're harder to dose. In WeedHub's directory you can filter by type and see the effects reported by the community.
The golden rule: start low, go slow
Whether you smoke, vape, or try an edible, start with a small dose and wait. If you inhale, take one puff and wait 10–15 minutes before deciding if you want more. For an edible, wait at least 90 minutes before taking another dose — the most common mistake is assuming 'it's not working' and doubling up, which leads to overwhelming experiences. Home-grown cannabis and unlabeled products have unpredictable potencies.
What to expect to feel
With a low dose you might feel muscle relaxation, mild euphoria, greater appreciation for music or food, and some time distortion (minutes seem longer). With higher doses you may experience rapid heartbeat, dry mouth, red eyes, and heightened sensitivity to stimuli. All of this is normal and temporary. Inhalation effects last 1–3 hours. Edibles can last 4–6 hours.
If you feel uncomfortable: the 5-step protocol
If you experience anxiety, panic, or discomfort: 1) Remember it's temporary — no healthy adult has died from a cannabis overdose. It will pass. 2) Change your environment — move to a quiet space, sit or lie down. 3) Breathe slowly — inhale for 4 counts, exhale for 6. 4) Drink cold water or eat something sugary — both can reduce intensity. 5) Don't stay alone if you're very uncomfortable — tell someone how you feel. CBD sublingual oil can also counteract THC-induced anxiety.
