THC, CBD, and the Other Cannabinoids: A Basic Guide
THC and CBD are the most well-known, but cannabis produces over 100 distinct cannabinoids. Learn how they work and what sets each one apart.
The endocannabinoid system
Cannabinoids work because humans have an endocannabinoid system (ECS) — a network of receptors (CB1 and CB2) and signaling molecules that regulate pain, mood, appetite, memory, and inflammation. The body produces its own cannabinoids (endocannabinoids like anandamide), and phytocannabinoids from cannabis interact with this same system.
THC: the psychoactive cannabinoid
Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the main driver of cannabis's psychoactive effects. It binds directly to CB1 receptors in the brain, producing euphoria, altered time perception, and in high doses can cause anxiety or paranoia in predisposed individuals. THC also has analgesic, antiemetic (reduces nausea), and appetite-stimulating properties.
CBD: balance without euphoria
Cannabidiol (CBD) produces no psychoactive effects. It doesn't bind directly to CB1 receptors — instead, it modulates them indirectly and acts on other systems (serotonin, vanilloid). CBD has documented anxiolytic, anti-inflammatory, and anticonvulsant properties. It can also counteract some adverse effects of THC, such as anxiety. Strains with a balanced THC:CBD ratio tend to be more manageable for beginners.
Other relevant cannabinoids
CBG (cannabigerol): the 'precursor' from which THC and CBD are synthesized in the plant. Has antibacterial and neuroprotective properties. CBN (cannabinol): forms when THC degrades through oxidation. Associated with sedative effects. CBC (cannabichromene): anti-inflammatory, may contribute to the entourage effect. THCV (tetrahydrocannabivarin): present in some African strains, may suppress appetite (unlike THC) and has shorter, more intense effects.
