How to store your cannabis: a storage guide
Poor storage destroys terpenes, degrades THC, and can cause mold. Learn how to keep your herb fresh for weeks or months.
Why storage matters
Well-stored cannabis keeps its aroma, potency, and terpene profile for months. Poorly stored, it can lose up to 50% of its terpenes in a week and THC gradually converts to CBN (less potent, more sedating). Worse: excess humidity encourages mold growth, which can cause respiratory problems. Proper storage is part of respecting your product.
The four enemies: light, heat, humidity, and air
UV light degrades THC and terpenes — never store cannabis in transparent containers exposed to sunlight. Heat: temperatures above 25°C accelerate degradation and promote mold. Excessive heat also evaporates terpenes, stealing your herb's aroma and flavor. Humidity: between 59% and 63% relative humidity is the ideal range. Below that it dries out (loses terpenes), above it mold can appear. Air: oxygen oxidizes THC — minimize airspace in your container.
The ideal container
Dark glass jar with an airtight lid — the gold standard. Glass doesn't add off-flavors (as plastic can), is impermeable to air, and is easy to clean. Add a Boveda 62% humidity pack to maintain perfect RH effortlessly. Avoid zip-lock plastic bags: they generate static electricity that knocks off trichomes and don't control humidity. Cedar boxes are beautiful but can transfer flavors.
How long it stays good
With proper storage (dark glass, 15–20°C, 59–63% RH): fresh flowers maintain optimal potency and aroma for 6 months; they remain consumable for 1–2 years with gradual terpene loss. Concentrates (rosin, hash) last less if exposed to air but can be preserved well when cold. Edibles follow the dates of their ingredients. In the freezer you can preserve flowers for years, but trichomes become brittle when frozen — handle carefully.
Common mistakes to avoid
Storing in the bathroom: too much humidity and variable temperature. Using the same container for multiple strains: terpene profiles mix together. Storing near tobacco: cannabis absorbs odors. Opening the jar constantly: each opening introduces air and humidity. Keeping accessible to children or pets: cannabis should be stored under lock or out of their reach, just like any controlled substance.
